Anatomy of Skin
A few facts about skin:
- Skin serves the purpose of protecting tissues, regulating temperature, aiding excretion/ vitamin D production, and initiating sense of pain, touch, heat, & cold.
- Skin condition is a good general indicator of a child's overall health
- Skin disorders are among the most common conditions affecting infants and children and are known to cause problems such as itching, pain, and changes in sensation.
- Skin disorders can influence psychosocial as well as physical development of children. Why?
- A few of the more common skin disorders include: atopic dermatitis (eczema), impetigo, fungal infections, viral infections, acne, pediculosis, and insect bites. Burns in both pediatric and adult populations will be covered in future course work.
- The purpose of this webpage is to highlight care for atopic dermatitis (eczema), impetigo, candida, and acne vulgaris. There is a separate webpage devoted to each to help you study these topics, and the conditions are presented in a similar format to that used for clinical prioritization. Please see the additional comments, and provide feedback by answering the poll below.
The purpose of this site is to target learning objectives regarding management of impaired skin integrity in the pediatric client. In addition, the presentation should promote better understanding and utilization of the clinical prioritization tool for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementing, and evaluation of nursing care. It is my belief that these type activities better enhance your abilities to apply nursing theory and practice in both the classroom and clinical settings. Please, leave your comments in the blog section at the bottom of each page if you use the resource. Thanks for visiting and best of luck in the coming weeks as you work to complete the course!
